Altnagelvin Area Hospital is an acute hospital which offers a range of services, including a 24-hour Accident and Emergency Department and is one of Northern Ireland's five designated cancer units. It has 481 inpatient beds and 48 day case beds.

Altnagelvin Area Hospital is currently undergoing a major redevelopment programme and information regarding location of services, specialty wards will be subject to change over the lifetime of the project.

The main hospital building consists of a tower block with a number of adjoining new extensions accommodating the outpatients department, day case unit, medical imaging, theatres, surgical wards, maternity ward, oncology unit, physiotherapy department. There are also separate buildings such as the Renal Unit, Spruce House, Anderson House, Breast Screening Unit and the laboratories and pharmacy building.  These are all signposted throughout the site. There are a number of entrances to the hospital:

  • Tower Block (Front)
  • Tower Block (Rear)
  • Wards 19 to 23
  • Outpatients Department
  • Day Case Unit
  • Accident and Emergency Department (Rear)
  • South Wing (Rear)

From 9.30 pm, access to the hospital is via the Accident and Emergency entrance only.


All wards / departments are signposted throughout the hospital. If you require assistance, please ask at the reception desk which is located in the front hall. 


Visiting Hours

In all of our Hospitals we have specific visiting times to ensure our patients have adequate rest and recuperation, receive timely care and treatment and help maintain hospital hygiene.


Daily visiting is 3-4pm and 7-8.30pm. The maximum number of visitors is restricted to two per patient at any one time. For details of Exception Arrangements (e.g. Children's Ward, Maternity Department, Neonatal Unit and Intensive Care please see our Visiting Policy)

Critical Care (ICU/HDU) visiting times are 2pm - 3:30pm and 5pm - 8:30pm.
