Eating Disorders Public Meeting

18/01/2011

The Western Trust and the Co-operation and Working Together (CAWT) Eating Disorders project, in conjunction with the Eating Disorders Association Northern Ireland, are holding a public meeting on Eating Disorders on Wednesday 26 January at 7:30pm in the Clinton Centre, Enniskillen.

The purpose of the meeting is to answer any questions people may have on eating disorders and to consult on the establishment of volunteer support groups for people with eating disorders and their families / carers in the Western Trust area. The meeting is a free event and is open to all. Support for the event has been provided by the European Union’s INTERREG IVA programme, secured by CAWT, the cross border health partnership.

Commenting on the meeting, Ann McCann, founder member of the Eating Disorder Association of Northern Ireland, said: “This public information event is an opportunity to learn more about eating disorders, and about the support services and treatment options available. Family, friends and carers, along with those affected, are invited to come along and ask any questions they may have about eating disorders and related issues”.

Yvonne McWhirter, Head of Mental Health Specialist Services in the Western Trust and representing the CAWT Eating Disorders Project said: “An eating disorder is a serious mental health condition that can affect a person of any age, male or female. It is important that people know where to go for help and that full recovery is possible so this public meeting is ideal for anybody seeking more information on eating disorders. We are keen to encourage discussion and if the demand exists, to assist with the establishment of locally-based eating disorder carers support groups in the border region.”

It is planned to establish an eating disorders support group locally if there is enough support for such an initiative. Anybody interested in becoming a volunteer facilitator can do so on the night. Training will be provided by the Eating Disorders Association (NI) for all volunteers.
