Medical and Dental Education
The Western Trust has a long standing tradition of providing excellent education and training for medical students, doctors in training and continuing professional development for consultants. The Trust has two Education Centres, one in the Erne hospital and one in Altnagelvin hospital which support the five hospitals in the Trust. The Trust continues to cultivate the strong ongoing relationships with Queen's University Belfast, Galway University and the Postgraduate deanery Northern Ireland Medical & Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA) and the General Medical Council (GMC) The Trust is committed to the effective delivery of health and social care services. In order to do so, it needs to ensure that the existing workforce is of the required standard and that it trains future doctors to ensure continuous high standards. Patient safety is at the centre of all Trust activities. Undergraduate and postgraduate education is a vital process in furthering safe patient medical care. The Trust also recognises the value of supporting committed clinical teachers at a time of increasing pressure to meet a wide range of objectives including service targets. Medical and Dental Education in the Western Trust continues to evolve. The launch of Altnagelvin and Erne Hospitals as teaching hospitals, affiliated to Queen’s University Belfast, School of Medicine took place in January 2011.
