Lisnamallard Industries Summer Open Day

Lisnamallard Industries is hosting its annual open summer day on Thursday 3 June 2010, from 10am to 4pm to show the summer range of crafts and horticultural goods for sale including garden furniture, planters, selection of bedding plants and ornamental garden trees.

Women’s Centre Opens at Tyrone County Hospital

The Western Trust is opening a new ‘Women’s Centre’ based in the Tyrone County Hospital to provide local clinics for women in the Omagh area. Whilst the centre will initially provide midwife-led antenatal clinics and fetal assessment, plans are in place to introduce outpatient gynaecology clinics in the near future. The Women’s Centre will open on Wednesday 19 May 2010.

Elaine Way, Chief Executive of the Western Trust has commended the quick actions of social workers and staff who work in older peoples services during the recent security alert.

Staff Fundraise for Haiti

Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust) Staff based at Holly Villa in the Tyrone and Fermanagh Hospital, recently organised  a Coffee Morning for a group of people travelling to Haiti in October to build houses, namely Tyrone Haiti Build. 

The Western Trust has been shortlisted for this year’s CHKS Patient Safety Awards - part of the CHKS Top Hospitals Programme 2010. The programme, which is now in its tenth year, is the only data-driven set of awards in the UK and celebrates excellence in the areas of patient safety, quality of care and data quality.

The Western Trust launched the Healthy Walking Bus Resource in conjunction with Kesh Primary School on their Walk to School Morning.

STAMPing out under-nutrition

Western Trust Nurses and Dieticians are leading the way in patient care by making good nutrition a priority for all children admitted to Altnagelvin Hospital. A joint initiative between the Children’s Ward and Dieticians has introduced a new screening tool to identify children who have poor nutrition.

Bowel Cancer Screening milestone reached in just three weeks

The Public Health Agency and Western Trust are encouraging all men and women aged 60-69 to avail of the new Bowel Cancer Screening programme.  Over 120 people have already participated in the screening programme since it was launched on 22 April.

Nursing and midwifery staff from the Western Trust are being recognised, this week, for their hard work and the significant contribution they make to quality patient care. The Theme this year for International Nurses Day is: Delivering Quality Serving Communities: Nurses Leading Chronic Care.

During Foster Care Fortnight (17-30 May 2010) the Western Trust is launching a new Fostering Cookbook brimming with tasty recipes compiled by families who are involved in fostering.

The legacy of Florence Nightingale will be celebrated at the University of Ulster’s Magee campus this weekend as an international nursing conference examines the relevance of her pioneering ideas to the modern profession.

 

Ulster’s School of Nursing at Magee has teamed up with the Florence Nightingale Foundation, the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety and the Health and Social Care Trusts to host a three-day event which marks the centenary anniversary of her death.

Endoscopy unit ready for bowel cancer screening

The Western Trust’s endoscopy unit at Altnagelvin Hospital which is to participate in the Northern Ireland bowel screening programme is among the best in the United Kingdom, according to inspectors who have visited the facility.

A steady increase in the prevalence of diabetes is anticipated over the coming years and work is underway to address these demands, a senior doctor with the Western Trust has said.

This conference is quickly becoming a landmark event attracting Clinicians, Academics and Business people from across the UK and Ireland and further a field, including those from the United States market.

Suicide alertness training in Plumbridge

The Western Trust Health Improvement Department recently facilitated a SAFE TALK training workshop in Plumbridge to promote suicide alertness for everyone. Safe TALK raises general awareness on how to prevent suicide in the community.

The Western Trust’s annual service in memory of babies who have died following a miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death will be held this year on Sunday 16 May 2010 at 3pm. The Service will take place in the MDEC Building at Altnagelvin Area Hospital.

Local Students get insight into Pharmacy Services

The Western Trust recently held a workshop in its Pharmacy Department at Erne Hospital to give local students a unique insight into the role of pharmacists and technicians. Students had the opportunity to tour the Pharmacy facility and interact with pharmacists on the wards and in the dispensary. Practical sessions followed with a chance to learn about aseptic techniques, make up suspensions and identify drugs using Information Communications and Technology. 

C-TRIC celebrates brings home Award to the North West

C-TRIC based at Altnagelvin Area Hospital this week welcomed home the ‘North / South Collaboration Award’ which it won in The Irish Times All-Island Innovation awards in association with InterTradeIreland.

Experts from both sides of the Atlantic including academics, healthcare practitioners and pharmaceutical industry figures are in Derry to deliver papers and presentations about the latest advances in the sector, which is a multi-million dollar industry in the United States.
