Students encouraged to consider a career in Occupational Therapy

Students encouraged to consider a career in Occupational Therapy Students from Tyrone and Fermanagh have been getting an insight into a career in Occupational Therapy thanks to a workshop hosted by the Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust).

Organised by the Western Trust’s Volunteer Office with School Employer Connections, the event at the Tyrone and Fermanagh Hospital in Omagh gave pupils the opportunity to gain a more in-depth knowledge of the skills and personal qualities required for the profession.

Paul Rafferty, Western Trust Head of Allied Health Professionals, which includes OT, said: “Occupational Therapy promotes patients’ independence by facilitating their return to home and to work and I would welcome and urge students from the Western Trust area to consider a career in Occupational Therapy. You will find the career extremely rewarding.”

OT Workshop 2This event has been developed by the Western Trust Volunteer Office as a follow-up to the highly successful Health Related Careers Open Days, to provide specific advice to students considering Occupational Therapy as a career.

Helena Doherty, Western Trust Occupational Therapy Service Manager, said: “We are delighted with the numbers of students who have participated and wish them good luck in their career choices. These workshops are an alternative to work experience requests which our Service is unable to provide.”

Julie Connolly, Class Programme Manager, School Employer Connections, who assisted the Volunteer Office in organising the event, said: "We work to establish meaningful connections between schools and employers so that employers can play a part in preparing students for the world of work. Such workshops provide an invaluable insight into careers and the qualifications required to work in the sector, while inspiring students through hands-on experience with the tools of the trade.”
