Date set for South West Hospital Opening.

The new £276m South West acute Hospital, Enniskillen is due to open for patients on 22 June 2012.  Western Health and Social Care Trust Chief Executive, Elaine Way, announced the date today.

Speaking on the site of the new hospital, Mrs Way said: “I am delighted to announce that the Western Trust is working towards a planned operational opening date for the new hospital of the 22 June 2012.  I would like to pay tribute to the efforts of the Western Trust staff and NIHG for keeping this monumental project on track.  It is no easy task to keep a state-of-the-art hospital facility of this magnitude on track and on course. The building of a £276m state-of-the-art acute hospital facility that will change the face of healthcare delivery in the area is a once in a lifetime project.”

Western Trust Deputy Chief Executive, Joe Lusby, commenting on the next stage for the hospital said: “Our focus now is on the hospital planning to ensure the safe and seamless transfer of patients and services from the existing Erne Hospital site to the new South West Hospital facility.  The Western Trust’s newly established commissioning group is engaging staff right across the Trust and is developing detailed plans to make this happen.  Staff have shown tremendous commitment to this landmark project and are equally looking forward to the operational opening date.  I have no doubt that this commitment will continue as we move into the final year of construction and equipping and the opening of the new hospital.”

Dr Jim Kelly, Lead Clinician for the new South West Hospital with the Western Trust based at the Erne Hospital said: “The finishing line is in sight and the excitement is really beginning to grow.  Staff at the Erne and right across the Western Trust are really looking forward to the 22 June 2012.”

Dr Kelly continued: “This is much more than just a building.  It is a project which will deliver many benefits for the thousands of patients who will receive their healthcare treatment at the new hospital for generations to come.  The new state-of-the-art facility will radically enhance the patient experience allowing our staff to deliver more effective ways of working in a purpose build acute hospital with access to the very latest technologies and equipment.”
