Western Trust celebrates University Teaching Status

The quality of education provided for medical students at the Western Trust’s Altnagelvin Hospital has been recognised with the award of University Teaching Status for the hospital.

Queen’s University Belfast has designated seven acute hospitals across Northern Ireland with university teaching status, in recognition of their provision of high quality clinical placements for medical students.

Dr William Dickey has been appointed as educational sub-dean for medical undergraduates in the Western Trust to lead the delivery of the undergraduate clinical educational programme within the Trust.

Speaking at a ceremony at Altnagelvin attended by representatives of the Trust and Queen’s, Western Trust Chairman Gerard Guckian said he was proud that Altnagelvin had been officially recognised as a Queen’s University Teaching Hospital.Launch of th Queen's University Teaching Status

Mr Guckian said: “It is certainly well deserved as recognition of the standard of teaching of our consultants and an endorsement of the quality of the student experience in the Western Trust. Our teaching consultants are committed to passing on their knowledge and upholding the quality of care in the medical profession.”

Dr Dickey said: “The creation of the Western Trust Sub-deanery is an important step in the development of the long-standing relationship between the hospital and Queen’s University.  As well as strengthening links between Altnagelvin and Queen’s, it recognises the commitment and enthusiasm of medical staff in training the next generation of doctors.”

Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University Professor Peter Gregson congratulated Altnagelvin Hospital on its new status.

He said: “The creation of educational sub-deaneries and teaching hospitals provides an integrated framework which enables academics and clinicians to work together to deliver the highest standards of medical education. These developments also recognise Northern Ireland’s acute hospitals, such as Altnagelvin, which perform a critical role in delivering high-quality clinical placements for our students.”
