Trust promotes Breastfeeding for Babies

15/06/2011

The Western Trust is inviting mums, mums-to-be and local school children to a Breastfeeding morning at Saint Columbs Park House on Tuesday 21 June 2011 between 10am an 1pm. The event, organised by the Trust to mark National Breastfeeding Awareness Week, aims to promote the importance of breastfeeding as the best possible way to feed a baby and provide a networking opportunity for those interested and involved in breastfeeding.

The Breastfeeding morning is being co-ordinated by the Western Trust’s Health Improvement Department in partnership with the Hospital and Community Midwives and Health Visitors.  Local breastfeeding support group members along with breastfeeding and pregnant mothers are invited to attend. Western Trust Lactation Midwife Audrey Moore said: “Breastfeeding is vitally important for the baby and the mother.  Breast milk contains everything a baby needs for healthy growth and development, providing the best possible start in life for the baby.  It helps reduce the risk of infections, allergies and childhood diabetes and at the same time the mother will develop a close bond with the child and benefit from a lower risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis.”

Throughout National Breastfeeding week, Western Trust Health Visitors and Midwives are supporting a number of other events across the Western Trust area to give advice to mums and mums-to-be on the benefits of breastfeeding. For more information about breastfeeding or breastfeeding activities in your area contact your local midwife, health visitor, breastfeeding support group or visit www.breastfedbabies.org
