Western Trust cares for local carers

Carers took time out at a special event in the City Hotel, Londonderry, as part of Carers Week 2011 thanks to the Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust). Carers Week ran from 13 June to 19 June and had the theme ‘The True Face of Carers’.

More than 60 carers from the Foyle, Limavady and Strabane areas attended the Carers Support Day which was an opportunity for those looking after someone to take a break from their caring responsibilities and relax with others involved in the same role. Carers had a chance to sample a variety of complementary therapies and health checks.

Aidan Gordon, Western Trust Assistant Director with responsibility for Carers Support, said: “The response from carers this year has been phenomenal. The event offers carers the opportunity to take a break away from their caring role and relax with other people with similar experiences. Those who attended are registered as carers with the Trust and we are keen to see more people who are involved in an unpaid caring role joining the carers database.”

Helen Ferguson, Director of Carers Northern Ireland, was the opening speaker at the event. She told carers, “You are the backbone of community care, providing thousands of hours of unpaid support and practical help to family members.  It is wonderful that the Trust is celebrating Carers Week by giving you a chance to look after yourselves, for a change. ”
