New Acute Hospital for the South West on track for completion

The New Acute Hospital remains on track for construction completion in May 2012 and opening its doors to patients on the 22 June 2012.

Western Trust Deputy Chief Executive, Joe Lusby said: "With less than nine months to go to the opening of the New Acute Hospital, there is great excitement amongst staff and anticipation for the changes that the new facilities will bring.

“Focus is now on finalising detailed commissioning arrangements together with the purchase of new equipment and technologies, and developing a training and familiarisation programme for staff and the local community.  The Western Trust is currently preparing for the start of its ICT installation programme which commences early December 2011.  The Trust now has some 77 ward managers and heads of departments/service working to progress a range of detailed commissioning activities.

“There is also much interest in the name of the facility following our recent naming competition amongst staff and community forum representatives.  We await an announcement from the Health Minister with the new name in the coming weeks.

“We acknowledge the immense commitment from Northern Ireland Health Group and our staff in bringing the project to this stage, and are now firmly focused on successfully completing the vast amount of work that lies ahead to ensure the safe and effective transfer of patients and readiness for opening.”

Keith Abel, Northern Ireland Health Group, General Manager said: "The project is now in the internal fit out and commissioning phase with room validation by the Independent Tester due to commence on programme in mid October 2011. Once validated individual areas are then locked down as we work towards the agreed overall completion date."
