Major enabling works contract awarded for the Omagh Hospital Complex

Major enabling works contract awarded for the Omagh Hospital Complex

The Western Trust today announced that Fox Contracts (Omagh) has successfully secured a major contract to widen the Donaghanie Road, and create the new entrance layout to the facility, as part of the Omagh Hospital Complex enabling works programme.

Western Trust Deputy Chief Executive, Joe Lusby said: “The enabling works programme has provided a welcome boost for the local construction industry with £7million already invested and a further £9million approved including the £700k scheme now awarded to undertake further preparatory works. This provides tangible proof that the Trust is advancing a number of works which will see the New Enhanced Local Hospital in place by 2015.”

Phase one of the Omagh Hospital Complex will include an Enhanced Local Hospital, GP accommodation and a Health and Care Centre.  The complex will consolidate services on one site, enabling integrated working among health professionals and will support effective regional and national healthcare networks.   This innovative, one-stop-shop approach to healthcare delivery will provide patients with better access to a wide variety of services, using the very latest modern diagnostic and treatment techniques and improving waiting times.

Mr Finbarr Fox, Managing Director of Fox Contracts said of the appointment: "We are very pleased to have won this significant contract for works in our local area.  The new hospital development is great news for local companies like ourselves who have been forced to travel to England and Scotland to secure work as a result of the economic downturn in the construction industry in Northern Ireland.

“This contract has enabled Fox Contracts to secure existing jobs and offer additional employment to new personnel.  We look forward to having the opportunity to tender for other elements of the Hospital Complex as the project progresses”.

Alan Moore, Western Trust Director of Strategic Capital Development said: “This is the first of a number of enabling works contracts planned over the coming months that will prepare the Tyrone and Fermanagh Hospital site for the construction of the new Enhanced Local Hospital in Omagh.  I am delighted that this and other contracts to be awarded in the coming months will create a boost to the local economy through this investment.

Mr Moore added: “The next major contract, expected to start on site in Spring, is the development of a new link road and bridge construction from the Donaghanie Road to the existing Bankmore/Crevanagh Road roundabout. Later in the year, demolitions and a water/sewage contract are also planned to clear the site in readiness for construction to begin in 2013.

Mr Moore took the opportunity to thank the public for their understanding of any minor traffic disruption which might occur during construction and provided assurances that the Trust and Contractor would ensure that this was kept to a minimum”.
