Volunteer Ken Thatcher

Tell us a little about yourself
I am a semi- retired teacher who taught careers in a local Grammar School for over 30 years.

Where do you volunteer?
I volunteer my time in the Volunteering Office, Spruce House on the Altnagelvin Hospital site.

Why did you decide to become a volunteer?
Because I have had such a good working relationship with volunteering in the Trust, I wanted to make sure it continued to do good work. I also found that the staff in the volunteering office have such magnetic personalities and are very entertaining, this made it so inviting for me to spend my time here.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?
I really enjoy working internally with staff and the volunteers and especially helping young people to organise opportunities which will help them to develop their careers.

Would you encourage others to volunteer with the Western Trust?
Of Course! It is a brilliant way for students to gain experience for their future studies to gain an insight of what a career in health care would be like. It is also a fantastic way for people to spend any free time gaining the satisfaction of helping people.
