Wells marks commencement of work on the new £85m Omagh Hospital

Wells marks commencement of work on the new £85m Omagh Hospital Health Minister Jim Wells today visited the site of the new £85m Omagh Local Hospital to mark the commencement of construction works. As works prepares to get underway the Minister was shown around the site to see at first hand the future development and transformation of the construction project.

Health Minister Jim Wells said: “I am delighted to officially mark the first stage of construction at the new Omagh Hospital.  From 2016 the Omagh Enhanced Local Hospital will provide a range of important hospital services to the community. This will cover a range of primary, secondary and community healthcare services appropriate for local delivery to the people of Omagh and surrounding district.

The new hospital will provide for 30 Rehabilitation beds and 10 Palliative Care Beds and will include a range of services such as a 24 place renal dialysis unit, a Health and Care Centre including modern GP Accommodation and an Urgent Care and Treatment Centre.  In addition it will also provide advanced diagnostic services together with 3, day surgery operating theatres and 22 recovery beds.

Whilst at the site the Minister also viewed a computer animated fly through showing an architect’s impression of the completed new hospital.  He continued saying: “I am committed to developing and improving the health and social wellbeing of people throughout Northern Ireland, with a health service that is centred on the needs of patients, clients and the wider population.

“I intend to work to provide sustainable, high-quality health and social care services and this new hospital will showcase the best ways of delivering services, and improving the interface between primary and secondary care. 

“The new hospital will transform the patient experience for people in the West of the province and will provide a welcome boost for our local economy.  I look forward to seeing the hospital’s completion in 2016 and wish everyone involved every success in seeing it come to fruition.”

Chairman of the Western Trust, Gerard Guckian said: "I was delighted to welcome Minister Wells on his first official to the Western Trust. During the visit Minister Wells viewed the construction progress of our two significant capital development projects, the Omagh Local Enhanced Hospital and the Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital. He also seen the excellent service provided at our Cath Lab at Altnagelvin.
