Flo and Gabrielle recognised in New Year Honours ListChairman of the Western Trust Niall Birthistle extended his warmest congratulations to Sr Florence Harper and Gabrielle Deans on their much deserved recognition in the Queen's New Year Honours List.

Gabrielle has been a volunteer with the Trust since 2013 and her role at Altnagelvin Hospital, Londonderry is to meet and greet/signpost patients arrived at the very busy Out Patients Department. She has also recently extended her volunteering time to include a role in the newly opened North West Cancer Centre. Gabrielle receives the BEM (British Empire Medal) for services to voluntary work in Northern Ireland.

Mr Birthistle said: “Florence and Gabrielle are shining examples of people who are totally dedicated and passionate about their work.  I was delighted to learn about both being included on the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. Florence is an exceptional nurse and has dedicated her career to providing the best care to patients from Omagh and surrounding areas who have attended the Cardiac Assessment Unit over the past thirty years.  Gabrielle has a very warm personality and is a great communicator, which makes her extremely popular with patients/visitors and staff. She is committed to her volunteering roles and her contribution really adds value to the patient experience – she is a great advocate for our organisation.  I wish to extend my warmest congratulations to them both and my heartfelt thanks for their commitment to Cardiology Services and voluntary work respectively with the Western Trust.”

Dr Paul McGlinchey, Consultant Cardiologist said: "I am personally delighted that Flo Harper has received this recognition of her commitment to the patients of the Western Trust in West Tyrone and beyond. She is an exemplary person and health care professional, a great friend as well as a great nurse. Nurses, in particular, should look no further than Flo when seeking to see what they can do to improve the lives of the population we serve. Whilst change is constantly happening, it is not always embraced, but Flo Harper consistently over a long number of years pushed boundaries of nursing to ensure that patients in Omagh received excellent nursing and medical attention that has afforded them longer and better lives. I would like to congratulate her on behalf of former and current colleagues who have worked with her in the Cardiac Assessment Unit over the past decades and wish her well in the future.”
