Foster Carers recognised at Foster Carer of the Year Awards

Foster Carers recognised at Foster Carer of the Year AwardsCongratulations to Western Trust Foster Carers, Helene and Andrew Goodwin from Omagh, who have been named Foster Carers of Distinction at the recent Northern Ireland’s Foster Carer of the Year Awards 2018.

As part of Foster Care Fortnight (14 – 28 May 2018), The Fostering Network in partnership with HSC Regional Adoption and Fostering Service held the prestigious event in Belfast recently to celebrate the central role foster carers play in providing stable, caring homes for vulnerable children and young people.

Helene and Andrew have been fostering for four years and talked about the love you can have for a child who needs you. Helene said: “Fostering taught me a lot and made me a better person.  My rewards are in looking after my fostered child.”

Earlier this year, Helene and Andrew surprised their fostered child with a trip to Euro Disney as they often expressed their wish to have their Disney photograph on the wall beside the other siblings.

Describing foster carers as going ‘above and beyond their duty’ to provide loving and stable environments for children and young people, Kieran Downey, Director of Women and Children’s Services at the Western Trust, said: “The Foster Carer of the Year event aims to recognise the achievements of all of our foster carers. Foster carers are local heroes for us all and we owe them a tremendous gratitude for the job they do in often difficult circumstances.  I would like to congratulate Helene and Andrew on their well-deserved award and thank them for their continued support to fostering in the Western Trust area.”

Kathleen Toner, Director of The Fostering Network in Northern Ireland, said: It was a real pleasure to meet Helene and Andrew and hear about the real difference they are making. Their commitment is inspirational.”
