34th Annual Cardiology Conference, South West Acute HospitalThe 34th Annual Western Trust Cardiology Update in conjunction with the Irish Cardiac Society and Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke (NICHS), took place in the South West Acute Hospital, Enniskillen recently.

The Cardiology conference, which has been coordinated by local Consultant Cardiologist Dr Monica Monaghan covered a diverse range of topics from angioplasty in stable angina, to the latest developments in cardiac transplantation. Dr Susan Connolly, Consultant Cardiologist who joined the South West Acute Hospital cardiology staff last Autumn having previously worked in Imperial College, London spoke about advances in lipid-lowering therapy and whether we are nearing a cure for atherosclerosis.

The key note lecture was delivered by the world renowned cardiac pathologist Professor Mary Sheppard from St Georges Hospital and the University of London who addressed the role of cardiac pathology in sudden cardiac death. Professor David Wood, Garfield Weston Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine in Imperial College and current President of the World Heart Federation also delivered a presidential address on the prevention of cardiovascular disease on a global scale.

The meeting was very well attended by delegates from all over Ireland and who come from an array of disciplines including primary care, nursing and hospital medicine.
