Virtual Cycle raises awareness of Organ Donation

Virtual Cycle raises awareness of Organ DonationWell done to everyone who took part today (19 June 2018) in a ‘virtual cycle’ (Spinathlon) in Altnagelvin Hospital and Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex to help raise awareness of organ donation and to promote the Western Trust’s involvement in the British Transplant Games this year.

The Transplant Games will be held in Birmingham from 2 to 5 August 2018 and participants in the virtual cycle covered the combined distance between Derry/Omagh to Birmingham and back (620km). Participants, which included transplant recipients, donors, family members and Trust staff cycled for a total of 30 minutes each.

The annual British Transplant Games aim to demonstrate the benefits of transplantation, encouraging patients to regain fitness, while increasing public awareness of the need for more people to join the organ donor register and discuss their wishes with their families. They also seek to thank and celebrate donor families and the precious gift of life.
