Successful Lapchole Pilot Celebration event held at Omagh Hospital and Primary Care ComplexThe Trust held a celebration event recently to acknowledge the dedication and innovation of Day Procedure staff who successfully performed laparascopic cholesystectomies (Lapchole)/removal of gall bladder day surgery at Omagh  Hospital and Primary Care Complex. The Lapchole pilot was undertaken on 21 female patients who were cared for in the Day Procedures Unit at the new Complex.

Speaking at the Lapchole Pilot Celebration event in the Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex  Geraldine McKay, Director of Acute Hospitals for the Western Trust said: “I am very proud that Omagh is leading the way in Lapchole day procedures as part of Professor Bengoa’s vision of transforming health care in the local area. The success of this pilot  is down to the exceptional team here in the Day Procedure Unit who have embraced the potential of providing enhanced day case surgery in this wonderful new facility.  This pilot lead by Dr Michael Mullan, Consultant Surgeon and Sr Carol Reid, Day Procedure Unit along with their team of dedicated and innovative staff  will continue to play a pivotal role in the provision of elective care in the future.

Geraldine continued: “All patients had post op follow up with a Staff Nurse on the day following their procedure and again with their surgeon two weeks after procedure.  Very positive feedback was received in relation to all cases with no conversion or return to theatre required for any of the patient group.  The Trust will seek now to extend the pilot to 50 cases after which time a further reaudit will take place.”

Julie McDowell from Clabby was the first patient to undergo the Lapchole Pilot day procedure at the Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex she said: “This has been a very positive experience and I felt I was in safe hands throughout from initial referral, undergoing the day procedure, recovery and follow up care.  Having my procedure here in Omagh allowed me to be treated quickly without having to sit on a waiting list as an inpatient in the Acute Hospital and I could go home that evening safe in the knowledge that if I had any concerns I could lift the phone and talk to a member of the Day Procedure Unit (DPU) Team. I am delighted to be the first patient to undergo this procedure and extremely grateful to have this fantastic service provided locally in this wonderful new facility.  The care provided by the staff in the DPU was exceptional and I hope this service continues to develop for the benefit of the people of Omagh and the surrounding area.”
