Road Safety Event for young drivers

Road Safety Event for young driversThe Western Trust Emergency Medicine staff at the South West Acute Hospital, Enniskillen in conjunction with the local Northern Ireland Fire Service and PSNI recently delivered a unique learning experience for local young drivers aimed at understanding the importance of road safety at Old Rossory Church Community Centre, Enniskillen.

Led by Emergency Medicine Consultants, Dr Darren Lillis and Dr Lynn Cromie, the Emergency Medicine team demonstrated a mock high fidelity trauma scenario in the community centre. Young drivers were active participants in the trauma team and gained an understanding of the injuries and emergency treatment required by an individual involved in a serious road traffic collision.

Dr Lillis, Emergency Medicine Consultant at the South West Acute Hospital explained: “This unique experience was well received by both the young drivers and their parents as it provided a rare opportunity for them to experience the hard hitting reality of trauma management after a road traffic collision. It is hoped that this event can be extended to other groups of young people in Co Fermanagh and help reduce the number of serious accidents on our roads.”
