Couch25K Proud Finishers - Summer 2019Congratulations to the Western Trust’s Couch25K participants who have completed the 8xweek programme across the Western Trust area over the past two months co-ordinated by Lesley Finlay and Shauna Healy from the Western Trust’s Health Improvement Equality and Involvement Department.

22 enthusiastic and committed Couch25K leaders completed a one day Leadership in Running Fitness (LiRF) course through Athletics NI in order to become Run Leaders. This was the second year of the course which was funded by the Public Health Agency (PHA) as part of the Physical Activity Action Plan for the Western Trust.

The Run Leaders established six C25K programmes in Bellanaleck; Enniskillen; Omagh; Strabane; Gransha and St Columb’s Park attracting over 220 staff to start the 8 week progamme at the beginning of May 2019.

Lesley Finlay, Western Trust’s Physical Activity Coordinator commented: “In the Western Trust we recognise that our staff are you greatest asset and it is important that we support them to look after their own health so they in turn can support and care for our service users.  Myself and Shauna would like to say a huge thank you to our run leaders who have given up their own time as volunteers to support their colleagues in promoting positive health and wellbeing. We have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and feedback from leaders and participants many of who are inspired to continue their running journey on a regular basis and even progress to 10K, 10 mile and half marathon level!”

Western Trust’s Couch to 5K leaders commented: “We have really enjoyed volunteering our time to lead and support each and every one of our participants to progress over the 8xweek programme and reach their 5K milestone.  We are extremely very proud of their individual achievements and we hope they will continue to keep active, encourage each other to go out and walk, jog or run and just simply enjoy being outdoors no matter if there is hail, rain or snow!  They have shown that by setting small goals you can achieve big milestones which will benefit their health and wellbeing.  Well done to everyone who completed the programme and keep running!”

Couch25K participants commented: Danica Conway, Strabane programme: “I feel I have benefited greatly from the C25K – my overall fitness has improved and there is no better stress relief than going for a run.”

Ann Mullan, Gransha programme: “The leaders were fantastic and very supportive and really brought the fun into getting out and getting active.”

The Couch25k participants took part in a number of Park Runs and 5k runs in their local areas and seeing the smiles and delight on everyone’s faces when they crossed the finish line was fantastic and the best way to end the Couch25K programme.”
