Avoca Lodge is a purpose built psychiatric hostel which caters for a group of nine residents with enduring mental health problems. For a variety of reasons, this particular residents group could not successfully be cared for or accommodated in any alternative community setting.
PHILOSOPHY
Avoca Lodge will provide care for all its residents based on a philosophy of treating them with courtesy, dignity and respect at all times.
In the day to day functioning of the hostel, all clients will be expected to take on a degree of responsibility compatible with their illness with greater emphasis placed on individual strengths as opposed to weakness.
Staff and residents will endeavour to promote a stimulating environment which will focus on partnership, client choice and the knowledge that all those working or residing in Avoca Lodge will have their views and opinions valued and acted upon necessary.
Through an ongoing process of giving and sharing information, the residents will be encouraged to exercise their rights as individual members of society, to expect a minimum standard of care and protection and to understand the extent to which they are empowered to initial action when things go wrong.
AIMS
• To create a therapeutic, safe and supporting environment in which residents can practice and develop new skills and experiences without fear of criticism or ridicule, and environment in which residents can increasingly assume responsibility for themselves and their behaviour.
• Provision of a safe physical environment for all residents.
• Continually improve the quality of service that we provide by periodic evaluation of our policies and procedures.
• To develop a culture which emphasis the importance of resident autonomy and involvement in the daily decision making processes relating to Avoca Lodge.
