Cedar Villa is a Rehabilitation Unit for people who suffer from severe and persistent mental health problems who manifest challenging and socially unacceptable behaviours. Such behaviours that are defined as challenging may be:-

• Behaviour which is physically aggressive. Where the assailant has struck at another person (staff or patient) on more than one occasion within the last 6 hours.

• Behaviour which is continually intimidating or threatening to a particular gender or staff or resident.

• Verbal aggression to other residents on two or more occasions within the last 6 hours

• Self harm or threatening self harm.

• Self mutilation in any form.

• Major incidents of self harm requiring medical or specialist interventions, i.e. suturing, requiring further investigation or resuscitation.

These clients necessitate a level of nursing staff input and supervision higher than that which can be provided elsewhere in the community.

Resident’s disabilities arise not only from symptoms of their psychiatric problems, but more importantly from ways in which they understand and cope with these.

AIMS

• To optimise the quality of life for its residents and create a homelike environment.

• To optimise and maintain residents existing skills and to encourage the acquisition of new skills.

• To enable residents to engage in as normal a range of activities and roles as their abilities allow.

• To reduce incidents and minimise the disruptive consequences of their difficult behaviours.

Focus is upon maximising and enhancing the individual’s strengths rather than concentrating on their problems.

The aim is to minimise the handicap consequent upon individual’s disabilities and enable them to lead as normal a life as possible with focus on optimising quality of life and social functioning.
