Patients can be in treatment for six months with weekly to three weekly visits to the unit for chemotherapy. At times the side-effects from the treatment may require the patient to be admitted to hospital and such patients are cared for on Ward 43.  The facilities in Ward 43 are of the highest standard, with all single rooms with ensuite facilities.  Four of the rooms are specialist in that they offer protection for patients whose resistance to infection is lowered as a side-effect of treatment.

The unit provides a telephone triage service which is a 24 hour helpline for patients with chemotherapy / cancer complications this service is shared with the inpatient department to ensure 24 hour coverage.

The unit has recently introduced scalp cooling for some chemotherapy regimens to help reduce hair loss and complementary therapies. The staff also deliver education programmes to the hospital and community staff.
