Fracture Liaison Service

The aim of our  Fracture Liaison Service is to identify people aged 50-75 who have suffered a first fracture. The service then provides assessment, advice and treatment recommendations to help prevent the risk of further fractures

Patients who attend the fracture clinics in the Western Trust aged 50-75 with a first fracture that is as the result of a low impact injury are invited for a scan where required and appointment with a nurse specialist to advise on the risks of osteoporosis and give advice to the patient on managing this. These clinics are held in Altnagelvin hospital and the South West Hospital Acute Hospital.

Some patients may also need onward referral to the consultant specialising in osteoporosis. Any medication required will be recommended to the patients GP.

The service also provides advice to GPs and other healthcare professionals regarding fragility fractures and osteoporosis.
