AIMS TO HELP SMOKERS STOP
FACTS
• Smoking claims between 2,700 and 3,000 lives in Northern Ireland each year – half of smokers die because of their habit.
• 27% of adults in the Western Board area are smokers
• 35% of 11-16 year olds report having smoked, with most smoking for the first time at the age of 12
• Lung cancer kills 800 people here every year – 84% due to smoking

The co-ordinator for Smoking Cessation Services in the WHSSB is Mark McBride. Mark's post is funded by the Big Lottery Fund.

The Regional 5 year tobacco action plan sets out a strategy to reduce tobacco consumption across Northern Ireland. It stresses the importance of smoking prevention and cessation work in achieving targets to reduce cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke and respiratory disease. To this end specialist smoking cessation services have been funded from monies allocated from the DHSSPS via the Western Tobacco Control Group. We are committed to ensuring that services are available across the Trust area and with the support of the Western Tobacco Control group intend to expand on the services offered to staff and our clients alike. Smoking is a key element of the trust Health promotion Strategy and the Health Promoting Hospital Initiative. Funding has been made available from the DHSSPS to establish smoking cessation services in a range of settings across the Board area.
Currently cessation support is available either in groups or one- to-one from trained specialists. You may wish to arrange an appointment with Kathleen Mc Manus. Kathleen works at both the Erne and Tyrone County Hospitals.
